Glasner lauds Crystal Palace’s display in Community Shield win over Liverpool

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner was impressed with his side’s display, after they defeated Liverpool on penalties to win the FA Community Shield.

The Eagles kicked off the 2025-26 EPL season with a thrilling win, claiming their first-ever Community Shield trophy by defeating the Premier League champions at Wembley on Sunday.

Palace continued their Wembley magic with another victory, after they had stunned Manchester City 1-0 in the FA Cup final in May.

“We know what we can do and how we can create chances. Things have developed over 18 months and the players are really starting to believe in what we are doing. I knew we could score at least two goals”, Glasner said after the match.

“I like it [the feeling] and I have to give big credit to the players for this win today, we came back and were able to decide the game on penalties. We were on the same level as Liverpool and it was a big performance, I’m proud of the team.”

Liverpool’s new signing Hugo Ekitike made an instant impact, scoring on his Wembley debut in the fourth minute, only for Jean-Philippe Mateta to level the match with a penalty 13 minutes later after a foul by Virgil Van Dijk.

Another summer acquisition Jeremie Frimpong, restored the Reds lead in the 21st minute in fortuitous circumstances as his mishit cross nestled into the back of the net.

Ismaila Sarr scored late on in the game to level the match after poor defending from Van Dijk, sending the game to a penalty shootout.

Mohamed Salah, Alexis MacAllister, Eberechi Eze, Harvey Elliott and Borna Sosa all missed their respective spot-kicks before Justin Devenny slotted in past Alisson to secure the win for the Eagles.

“I told the players to keep calm, I was proud of how they played. They were unlucky with the second goal. I knew if we stuck to the plan then we would get our chances and we always know if we take them we will win the game”, he continued.

“I’m very happy with the squad because they just won another trophy. I see the number of games we have to play next season as a reward, we want to win something and we want the European football.”
