Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca was pleased with his side’s performance in their 2025/2026 Premier League season opener despite slipping to a frustrating goalless stalemate against Crystal Palace.
Maresca’s side wasted several chances in a frustrating stalemate at Stamford Bridge, though they were relieved when Eberechi Eze’s early free-kick was ruled out due to Marc Guehi’s infringement in the Chelsea wall.
The Blues created openings, with substitute Andrey Santos blasting over and Estevao going close, but neither team found a breakthrough.
Afterward, Maresca pointed to his squad’s limited pre-season, with only two friendlies following their Club World Cup run, as a factor in their sluggish display.
“I think we created enough chances to win the game. We just conceded the free-kick in the first half, which they scored from,” Maresca told Sky Sports.
“I am happy with the performance because they have already played seven or eight games, but we just have to play more.”
Despite this, the former Leicester City boss maintained that he was pleased with his side’s overall performance in the game, singling out their positive attitude despite enduring a frustrating afternoon at Stamford Bridge.
“The attitude overall from the boys was very good. They tried until the end to win the game. “Slowly, we will be better. We have to give them rest in this moment, recover energy and go again on Friday.”
Next up for Maresca and the Blues is another London derby with a trip to West Ham United on the horizon. Chelsea will be hoping to kick-start their season with a convincing win at the London Stadium.
