Manchester United have been handed a five-day window to respond to the EFL’s ruling after Grimsby Town were fined for using an ineligible player in their Carabao Cup clash.
According to the BBC, Grimsby were hit with a £20,000 fine for fielding Clarke Oduor. The winger had joined on loan from Bradford City just a day earlier, but the club missed the player registration deadline by one minute.
Oduor came on in the 73rd minute. His penalty was stopped by Andre Onana in the shootout after the 2-2 draw in regular time. Bryan Mbeumo later missed his effort, sealing the shock result in Grimsby’s favour.
The Mariners will pay £10,000 immediately. The remaining balance is due at the end of the season.
This isn’t the first time such an issue has happened in the Carabao Cup. Other clubs in similar cases have also accepted fines rather than harsher penalties.
However, history shows different outcomes in the FA Cup. In 2023, Barnsley were expelled from the tournament after fielding an ineligible player against Horsham. That ruling saw Horsham reinstated into the next round.
The ball is now in the Red Devils’ court as they weigh their next move in the five-day appeal window.
