Steven Gerrard has played down talk of a dramatic return to Anfield, insisting he has no interest in taking Arne Slot’s job despite admitting he would welcome the chance to manage Liverpool one day.
Liverpool’s heavy investment in the transfer market, including the record-breaking arrivals of Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, has yet to translate into consistent performances, while a very public disagreement with Mohamed Salah has only fuelled speculation over the manager’s future.
That uncertainty has inevitably brought Gerrard’s name back into the conversation. The former captain has been without a club since leaving Al Ettifaq in January and, given his legendary status at Anfield, some supporters have pushed the idea of him being the man to restore discipline and direction.
However, speaking on TNT Sports’ Ally’s Social Club, Gerrard was keen to shut down any suggestion that he is angling for an immediate return. While he acknowledged that managing Liverpool remains a long-term ambition, the 44-year-old stressed that the timing has to be right and that he is not seeking to replace Slot at this stage of his career.
“I’ll be brutally, brutally honest with you,” began Gerrard, who former manager Jürgen Klopp backed to lead Liverpool one day in the future.. “I’d help Liverpool in any department at any minute of every day. I’d help them with anything.
“I don’t want the Liverpool manager to lose his job, I want Arne Slot to fix this and turn it round and make Liverpool great. I was bouncing all over the city four months ago, five months ago, when Liverpool won the league.
“I’m a Liverpool fan, I want the best for Liverpool, but if Liverpool need me in any department at any time, I’ll be there for them.”
Despite the noise of a potential managerial change, Slot has guided Liverpool to three wins from their last three games across competitions and the Reds will have a good opportunity to continue their winning streak when they take on Wolves next weekend.
