Sean Dyche has moved quickly to manage expectations around Nottingham Forest’s January transfer plans.
Speaking ahead of the Premier League clash with Manchester City, the Forest boss made it clear that major business is unlikely after heavy investment in the summer.
Dyche acknowledged that opportunities can still arise. However, he stressed that the club will only act if the right profile becomes available and fits the long-term vision.
“[It is] unlikely to be a big window,” he said. “But this club has shown that if the right people become available, it can happen. But considering the investment in the summer I doubt we’ll be spending a lot.”
Attention then shifted back onto the pitch. Dyche reflected on the recent defeat to Fulham and admitted the performance lacked the sharp edge shown in previous outings.
Even so, he praised the supporters and urged patience as the squad continues to adapt.
“You have to park things pretty quickly. The group did well overall, but it certainly wasn’t the intensity we saw in the Tottenham game.
“I thought the game was a bit flat in general. Our fans were fantastic, trying to get the team going – I didn’t think it was a performance that lost you a game, but not one that wins you one either.”
Dyche also pointed to the bigger picture. He reiterated that building consistency and reshaping the club’s culture is a gradual process, especially with players still finding their feet in the Premier League.
“I’ve mentioned consistency since I got here. Changing culture takes time. The players are doing well with it – they were miles off it at Everton, but certainly not miles off it tonight.
“Some of these players are still getting used to the Premier League. We fast-tracked Douglas Luis’ return – he played well in Utrecht, but he’s still getting fitter and stronger. [Ola] Aina is recovering well, hopefully he’ll be back shortly.”
Next up is a stern examination against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.
Dyche was full of respect for the champions and knows Forest must be at their defensive best to compete.
“It’s fantastic what he’s achieved. No two ways about it – what he’s done has been remarkable in many different ways.
“We need them to have a quiet day – we need to play very well. You have to be defensively sound, you’re not going to dominate the ball. They’re a top side without a doubt.”
He also singled out City’s talisman while stressing the depth of threat Guardiola’s side possess.
“[Erling Haaland] is a fantastic player – goal machine – but it’s not just him. They keep evolving and they’re doing that again this season.”
Forest now turn their focus to the Etihad challenge, knowing discipline, patience and intensity will be key if they are to frustrate the champions.
