Augsburg produce shock comeback to end Bayern’s unbeaten league run

Augsburg stunned Bayern Munich with a shock 2-1 victory at the Allianz Arena on Saturday, bringing the hosts’ unbeaten start to the 2025–26 league season to an end.

The Bavarians had won 16 and drawn two of their first 18 league games of the season and were unbeaten in 27 Bundesliga matches dating back to last season.

However, that run came to an end on Saturday in the hands of struggling Augsburg, who moved six points above the relegation zone with the victory.

As expected, the hosts started on top and looked set for another easy win when they broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute of the clash.

Hiroki Ito rose highest to head home a corner kick from Michael Olise, who recorded his 14th league assist of the Bundesliga campaign.

The visitors then struck the woodwork in first half injury time, although it was Bayern who took the slender one-goal lead into the break.

Jonas Urbig kept Bayern’s advantage in the second half with a save to deny Claude-Maurice, while Elvis Rexhbecaj blazed over.

However, they got their deserved equalizer in the 75th minute as Arthur Chaves beat the goalkeeper from a corner to head home.

The comeback was completed when Han-Noah Massengo slotted in after a fine team move to put the visitors 2-1 up in the match.

The Bavarians then searched for an equalizer, with Olise coming closest with an attempt that struck the woodwork.

Augsburg sealed the 2-1 win to end Bayern’s hopes of an unbeaten league season, while reviving their own hopes of survival this season.

Bayern Munich still top the Bundesliga standings with 50 points after 19 matches, 11 ahead of second-placed Borussia Dortmund who visit Union Berlin later in the day.

They will hope to bounce back from their slump when they face PSV Eindhoven in their final UEFA Champions League league-phase match on Wednesday.
