Arsenal Women crowned history makers with FIFA Women’s Champions Cup triumph

Arsenal Women have written another golden chapter into their storied legacy, becoming the first-ever winners of the FIFA Women’s Champions Cup after a thrilling 3-2 extra-time victory over Brazil’s Corinthians at Arsenal Stadium.

In a final that ebbed and flowed like a heavyweight title fight, the Gunners twice took the lead in regulation time through Olivia Smith and Lotte Wubben-Moy.

However, Corinthians refused to back down, clawing their way back on both occasions to force an additional 30 minutes in north London.

Just when the contest looked destined for penalties, Arsenal shifted up a gear. In the 104th minute, Caitlin Foord delivered the decisive blow, firing home the winner to spark wild celebrations and seal a landmark triumph for the club.

This latest silverware further cements Arsenal Women’s place at the summit of English and European football.

Already the only English side to have been crowned European champions, first achieved during the famous Treble-winning season of 2007, the club’s honours list now boasts 15 league titles, 14 FA Cups, seven League Cups, and this historic global crown.

Arsenal’s path to the Women’s Champions Cup was secured by lifting the UEFA Women’s Champions League for the second time last season, earning a place alongside champions from the other five continental confederations.

The tournament unfolded with drama from the outset, as Auckland United were knocked out by Wuhan Jiangda, who in turn fell to Moroccan champions AS FAR to set up a semi-final clash.

Momentum was firmly with the Gunners in midweek, as they swept aside AS FAR 6-0 at Brentford.Goals from Stina Blackstenius, Frida Maanum, Mariona Caldentey, Olivia Smith, and a brace from Alessia Russo underlined Arsenal’s attacking firepower, while Corinthians edged past Gotham FC to book their place in the final.

Gotham would later claim third place with a 4-0 win over AS FAR.

When the dust settled in N5, it was Arsenal Women standing tallest.

With resilience, quality, and a winning mentality on full display, the Gunners didn’t just lift a trophy; they made history, setting a new benchmark on the global stage of women’s football.
