Soucek breaks Czech record but late Sesko strike denies West Ham victory

Tomas Soucek experienced a night of pride and heartbreak as his historic goal was wiped out by a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser in West Ham United’s 1-1 Premier League draw with Manchester United at the London Stadium.

After a tense and tactical first half, the Hammers shifted gears early in the second period.

Soucek surged forward to combine brilliantly with Jarrod Bowen before calmly converting a low cross at the near post, sending the Claret and Blue faithful into celebration mode.

That clinical finish was more than just an opener; it was a record-breaker.

The Czech midfielder’s 39th Premier League goal moved him clear of former Liverpool star Patrik Berger as the highest-scoring Czech player in the competition’s history.

For much of the contest, it looked as though the milestone strike would also deliver a vital three points in West Ham’s fight for survival.

However, just as the final whistle approached, Manchester United substitute Benjamin Sesko struck in the dying moments of added time, silencing the home crowd and rescuing a point for the visitors.

The late blow leaves West Ham two points behind 17th-placed Nottingham Forest in the relegation battle.

“I’m really proud to break the record, because I’m always proud of where I am from. I am from the Czech Republic, and I want the people there to be proud of me,” Soucek said.

“I did my maximum to get this record, after I was level for so long with Patrik Berger, who was an incredible player. Now it’s mine, and I’m so happy. It was a great goal, after Jarrod [Bowen] made a great run, and I was just in the right place at the right time.

“Obviously, the result is tough to take. It’s devastating with how it happened, and it feels similar to what happened at Chelsea a couple of games ago.

“But on the other hand, we have to look at the positives, rather than these small moments. We’ve shown how much we care and how well we can play, and we need to build this momentum because the spirit in the changing room right now is so different to a couple of months ago. We just need to keep working and carry on.”

Despite the setback, West Ham can draw encouragement from their recent form, with three wins in their last five league outings.

The performance against an in-form Manchester United side under Michael Carrick demonstrated renewed belief and cohesion within the squad.

Soucek emphasized that unity, both on and off the pitch, will be key as the season enters its decisive stretch.

“We have to look at things positively. The way we played, the way we pressed and everything we did on the pitch, we have to take it into the next games now and keep building that winning mentality.

“Now I feel that we are all together, including the fans, the players, the coaches and the staff at the training ground. When I meet the fans outside of the stadium they are just with us, and I really feel that.

“Tonight they were incredible, and we could feel they were behind us. They know what our goal is, which is to be in the Premier League next season. That’s what we’re all fighting for, and we’ll keep going.”

As West Ham prepare for an Emirates FA Cup trip to Burton Albion before returning to league action against AFC Bournemouth, the mission remains clear: convert promising performances into precious points.

Soucek may have etched his name into Premier League history, but the bigger battle, securing top-flight survival, is still very much alive.
