Former France star Corentin Martins renews Madagascar contract for AFCON 2027

Former France international Corentin Martins will continue his journey on the African touchline after agreeing a new deal to remain head coach of the Madagascar national football team, with qualification for the 2027 TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations now firmly in focus.

The Malagasy Football Federation confirmed that Martins has signed a one-year contract extension, including an option for a further year, underlining their commitment to stability as the Barea push forward with renewed continental ambition.

The agreement was officially sealed at the Barea Mahamasina Stadium after weeks of discussions, following the expiration of the coach’s previous deal in January.

Momentum has clearly played its part in the decision. Since his appointment in January 2025, Martins has overseen a period of steady rebuilding, guiding Madagascar through a demanding schedule of World Cup qualifiers and international friendlies.

In eight matches across 2025, the Barea collected five wins, including eye-catching qualifying victories against the Central African Republic, Chad and Comoros, alongside a confidence-boosting friendly success over Equatorial Guinea.

At the same time, defeats against African heavyweights Ghana, Mali and DR Congo served as reality checks.

Rather than setbacks, the federation viewed those losses as learning curves; moments that exposed the gap to the continent’s elite while helping shape the next phase of development.

In a statement, the FMF said Martins would “continue to lead the Malagasy national team, with the objective of maintaining the positive momentum achieved so far and increasing the competitiveness of the Barea on the African stage.”

That message captures the wider vision: progress with patience, rather than quick fixes.

Crucially, the optional extension clause offers flexibility. It allows the federation to assess progress while preserving continuity within the technical setup: a key factor in a football landscape where frequent coaching changes often derail long-term plans.

Looking ahead, the road to the 2027 CAF Africa Cup of Nations will define Martins’ second chapter in charge.

His focus remains on refining the squad, blending experienced internationals with emerging talent to create a more balanced and resilient group.

Supporters still draw inspiration from Madagascar’s remarkable AFCON debut in 2019, when the Barea reached the quarter-finals and captured continental attention.

That historic run continues to fuel belief that a return to Africa’s top table is possible.

For now, the direction is clear. The project moves forward, the foundations stay intact, and Corentin Martins remains the man trusted to guide Madagascar toward another shot at continental glory.
