Bayern Munich’s Davies rejoins Canada camp amid World Cup fitness race

Canada captain Alphonso Davies has delivered a timely morale boost to the national team after rejoining the squad ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, although the Bayern Munich star remains unavailable for selection as he continues his recovery from injury.

The dynamic left-back is working his way back from a hamstring problem suffered during Bayern Munich’s UEFA Champions League semi-final exit against Paris Saint-Germain last month.

While not yet ready to return to competitive action, Davies was present as Canada defeated Uzbekistan 2-0 in a World Cup warm-up match on Monday in his hometown of Edmonton, Alberta.

Before kickoff, the 25-year-old was seen running laps around the pitch as he continued his rehabilitation programme, offering encouragement to teammates from the sidelines.

Speaking after the match, Davies expressed his delight at being back with the squad.

“It feels nice to get back on the pitch and do some running. I’m happy to be home, I’m happy to be with the boys and support them, whether it’s just on or off the pitch.”

Davies officially linked up with the squad on Sunday after being named in Canada’s 26-man World Cup roster despite concerns over his fitness.

The Bayern defender remains cautious about setting a timeline for his return, insisting his focus is on steady progress rather than rushing back.

“We just have to see how everything goes over the next couple days,” Davies said. “I’ll just continue my rehab, my progression, and see how I’m feeling, day by day, step by step.”

The latest hamstring issue is another challenge in what has been a frustrating period for Davies.

The Canadian star has not represented his country since March 2025 after suffering an ACL injury during the CONCACAF Nations League Finals.

Although he successfully returned to action, recurring fitness concerns have disrupted his momentum over the past year.

Reflecting on the difficult journey, Davies admitted the physical and mental demands have tested him.

“It was tough. I mean, the last year was obviously an up-and-down moment for me, with the ACL that happened, with the low muscle injuries here and there, but at the end of the day I think I just have to keep my head down, keep working, can’t let that affect me.

“Obviously, it was tough mentally and physically, but I’m feeling good now, and hoping to recover as quickly as possible.”

Davies remains one of Canada’s most influential players, having scored 15 goals in 58 appearances for the national team.

His leadership and attacking threat from the left flank could prove crucial as Canada prepares for its World Cup campaign.

Canada opens the tournament on June 12 in Toronto against Bosnia and Herzegovina, and while Davies’ availability for that clash remains uncertain, the national team will be encouraged by his continued progress.

For now, the focus remains on recovery, with Canada hopeful their captain can play a meaningful role as the World Cup unfolds.
