Slot laments ‘bad deja vu’ in Champions League defeat to Galatasaray

Arne Slot admitted it felt like “bad deja vu” after Liverpool suffered another narrow defeat to Galatasaray in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round-of-16 clash in Istanbul.

The Turkish champions seized control of the tie with a 1-0 victory at the intimidating Rams Park, mirroring the same scoreline by which they beat Liverpool earlier in the competition’s league phase in September.

Galatasaray struck early when Mario Lemina powered home a seventh-minute header from a corner, once again exposing Liverpool’s vulnerability from set-pieces.

The goal marked the 10th time the Reds have conceded from a corner this season, a defensive issue that continues to trouble Slot’s side.

Despite falling behind, Liverpool created several chances throughout the match but were unable to convert their opportunities into an equaliser.

“It’s bad deja vu, you could say,” Slot said. “The score is the same as the match three months ago. But we played a game where we could have scored much more. We created many chances; we missed many. We were really good in the first 15 minutes. But we couldn’t find the goal.

“This is a very difficult stadium. Both for opposing players and opposing coaches. It’s hard to concentrate and it’s hard to communicate. Galatasaray are very lucky to have such an atmosphere.

“Now we have a match against Galatasaray at our home stadium. We have fantastic fans who always give us strength. They will show this at Anfield, our home ground, and will be a driving force for us.”

Looking ahead, Liverpool will now turn their focus to the decisive return leg at Anfield, where they must overturn the deficit to keep their Champions League hopes alive.

With the Anfield crowd expected to play a key role, Slot will be hoping his side can transform their attacking chances into goals and produce the turnaround needed to stay in Europe’s premier competition.
