Arteta hails Arsenal’s semi-final boost despite struggle against Sporting CP

Mikel Arteta has described Arsenal’s progression to the Champions League semi-finals as a “massive boost,” even after a subdued performance against Sporting CP.

Heading into the second leg with a narrow advantage, the Gunners held firm to secure a 0-0 draw at home.

Ultimately, Kai Havertz’s decisive goal in Lisbon proved enough to carry Arsenal through to the last four.

While the result ensured qualification, the performance itself lacked fluency.

Arsenal struggled to find rhythm in attack, managing just a single shot on target across the 90 minutes.

Nevertheless, when the final whistle blew, it was job done as they edged forward in the competition.

In doing so, Arsenal made history by reaching consecutive Champions League semi-finals for the first time—an achievement that underlines their steady rise under Arteta.

Looking ahead to a crucial Premier League showdown against Manchester City, Arteta believes the European progress will inject confidence into his squad.

“100 per cent, it’s a massive boost,” Arteta said after the match.

“To be in the semi-finals of the Champions League is extremely tough. We are going to enjoy it because we deserve it.”

As the title race intensifies, Arsenal’s recent dip in form has sparked debate over their ability to maintain composure under pressure.

A defeat to City could shift momentum dramatically, potentially allowing their rivals to draw level at the summit.

However, Arteta remains unfazed, firmly backing his players’ mentality despite the external noise.

“You can think of the last 48 hours. Everything that has been said. We are watching the series in July, and then we have to ask ourselves a question. Where are Arsenal placed? All of us would say, ‘They are in the bottom three.’

“What are we talking about? Enjoy where we are as a club. If someone doesn’t want to, I think it’s so weird.”

Moreover, the Arsenal boss highlighted the physical and mental demands of competing at the highest level, especially in English football’s relentless schedule.

“There is a reason why we are the only English team in the competition, because this league and this schedule takes the hell out of you.

“We are not perfect, we need to improve things, that’s for sure and we recognise that. But there’s value in what these players have done.”

As the campaign enters its decisive phase, Arsenal now switch focus from European success to domestic battle, aiming to carry their momentum into what could be a defining clash in the Premier League title race.
