Le Bris backs Sunderland’s Diarra after costly miss against Aston Villa

Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris has backed Habib Diarra to learn from a crucial late miss that proved costly in dramatic defeat to Aston Villa.

In a thrilling encounter at Villa Park, Sunderland mounted a spirited comeback to level the score at 3-3 late in the game.

However, momentum slipped at the decisive moment when Diarra broke through on goal in stoppage time but failed to convert, his attempted chip denied by Emiliano Martinez.

Almost immediately, the tide turned. Villa surged forward, and Tammy Abraham applied the finishing touch from a cross by Lucas Digne, sealing a dramatic win for the hosts.

Despite the disappointment, Le Bris remained composed, stressing the importance of learning from key moments in high-stakes matches.

“We will have a conversation, because we always talk during the week after a game to understand what happened, his feeling, my feeling, and we can compare to go further.

“So this situation will be important, obviously, because it’s a key moment, and he had the opportunity, it was in the right timing to run behind, but he didn’t probably make the right decision at the end, and the goalkeeper is a good goalkeeper as well. So we will learn, I repeat, from this experience.”

While the missed chance ultimately defined the result, Sunderland’s fighting spirit against a top-four-chasing side offered encouragement.

Nevertheless, as the dust settles, attention now turns to refining decision-making in crucial moments—an area Le Bris believes will shape the team’s progress moving forward.
