Gordon hails England’s strongest World Cup squad

Anthony Gordon believes England’s unity and togetherness could prove to be the difference as the Three Lions continue their quest for FIFA World Cup 2026 glory.

Fresh from England’s dramatic 3-2 victory over co-hosts Mexico in the Round of 16, the winger has lifted the lid on the atmosphere inside Thomas Tuchel’s camp, describing it as the strongest and most connected squad he has ever represented.

England booked their place in the quarter-finals after surviving a thrilling encounter at the Azteca Stadium, where they played more than 40 minutes with ten men following Jarell Quansah’s red card.

Despite the adversity, the Three Lions held firm to secure a memorable victory and set up a last-eight showdown against Norway.

For Gordon, the fighting spirit displayed in Mexico was no accident. Instead, he believes it reflects the culture Tuchel has built behind the scenes.

Speaking on the latest episode of Extra Time, Gordon praised the chemistry that has developed throughout the tournament.

“Camp life is amazing. I am absolutely loving it,” said Gordon.

“We have got an unbelievable group, the best England group I have been a part of by a country mile, in terms of chemistry, in terms of connection, not just on the pitch but off the pitch.

“In terms of standards off the pitch, we are holding each other accountable, which is really important for any team that wants to be successful.”

Tuchel has frequently spoken about creating a “brotherhood” within the England squad, and Gordon believes those values are becoming increasingly evident as the tournament progresses.

The Barcelona winger has emerged as one of England’s most influential attacking players during the World Cup.

His pace, work rate and direct running have created vital moments in knockout football.

Against DR Congo, Gordon produced two assists for captain Harry Kane as England fought back to claim a dramatic victory and qualify for the Round of 16.

He followed that performance by winning the decisive penalty against Mexico, allowing Kane to convert what proved to be the winning goal in another unforgettable contest.

Despite those important contributions, Gordon insists he wants to become even more decisive in front of goal.

The winger revealed he has been working closely with England captain Harry Kane, hoping to learn from one of the game’s most clinical finishers.

“I love finishing, it’s a big part of my game, I want to be a goalscorer.

“The only way I can truly get to where I want to be is by practising every single day.

“The more practice allows you to become free in the mind on game day.”

Gordon also explained that Kane has become an invaluable mentor throughout the tournament, sharing insights that he hopes will elevate his finishing ability.

“I have been speaking to H [Kane] and trying to gain as much knowledge as I possibly can because he can do it on both feet, doesn’t matter the angle, doesn’t matter off his touch, the ball finds a way into the net.

“I have been trying to pick up a little bit off him.”

England now turn their attention to a challenging quarter-final clash against Norway, who stunned five-time world champions Brazil to reach the last eight behind another outstanding display from Erling Haaland.

With confidence growing inside the England camp and the squad embracing Tuchel’s philosophy of unity and accountability, Gordon believes the Three Lions possess far more than individual talent.

He sees a dressing room built on trust, resilience and shared ambition—qualities that could prove decisive as England continue their pursuit of a first World Cup title since 1966.
