Celebrations following France’s FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-final victory over Morocco descended into disorder in central London, leaving one police officer injured and four people under arrest after clashes broke out on Edgware Road.
The disturbances occurred late on Thursday night after France secured a 2-0 victory over Morocco in Boston, booking their place in the World Cup semi-finals courtesy of goals from Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele.
As fans gathered in large numbers to celebrate the result, the atmosphere reportedly became increasingly tense, prompting a major response from the Metropolitan Police.
Videos widely shared across social media appeared to show confrontations between groups of supporters and police officers, with traffic brought to a standstill as crowds filled the roadway.
According to the Metropolitan Police, officers were initially called after people gathered on the road and disrupted traffic flow.
The situation escalated when individuals allegedly began throwing bottles and setting off fireworks, forcing additional officers to attend the scene in an effort to restore order.
In an official statement, the force confirmed that one officer sustained injuries during the unrest.
“One officer has been injured, and four people have been arrested following disorder in Edgware Road.
“Officers were initially called after a group of people congregated in the road and blocked traffic. The incident then escalated with the group throwing bottles and setting off fireworks. As a result, further officers were deployed to the area.”
Police confirmed that the injured officer was transported to hospital after suffering a head injury believed to have been caused by a glass bottle.
Fortunately, no further injuries were reported during the incident.
The Metropolitan Police said officers remained on the scene throughout the night as they worked to disperse the crowds and restore normal movement in the area.
The force confirmed that four people were arrested on suspicion of violent disorder.
“One officer was taken to hospital for head injuries, it is believed he had been hit by a glass bottle. No other injuries were reported. Officers remained in the area and made four arrests for violent disorder, with the group dispersing and the road re-opened from around 01:00hrs.”
Authorities added that the area was eventually cleared in the early hours of Friday morning after public order had been restored.
The Metropolitan Police have vowed to identify anyone else involved in the violence by reviewing surveillance footage and videos shared online.
Officers warned that attacks on emergency personnel and disorderly behaviour would not be tolerated.
“We will not tolerate such disorder on our streets, or attacks on our officers. A police presence will remain in the area overnight and we will be reviewing CCTV and video footage circulating on social media to ensure all those responsible are brought to justice.”
The investigation remains ongoing as detectives examine available evidence to determine whether additional arrests are necessary.
