Rogers reveals England’s plan to stop Norway’s Erling Haaland

England midfielder Morgan Rogers has admitted Erling Haaland is one of the most dangerous forwards in world football but believes the Three Lions can keep their FIFA World Cup 2026 dream alive by cutting off the Norwegian striker’s supply line rather than focusing solely on stopping him.

England will face Norway in a blockbuster quarter-final in Miami on Saturday, with Haaland arriving in sensational form after scoring seven goals to inspire the Scandinavian nation into the last eight.

The Manchester City superstar has continued the remarkable scoring consistency that has defined his career.

After claiming the Premier League Golden Boot for the third time in four seasons with 27 league goals in 35 appearances, Haaland has carried that ruthless finishing touch onto the world’s biggest stage.

His latest heroics came against five-time world champions Brazil, where he played a decisive role in Norway’s stunning 2-1 Round of 16 victory.

Despite Haaland’s frightening reputation, Rogers insists England’s focus extends beyond one player.

Speaking ahead of the crucial encounter, the Aston Villa midfielder acknowledged the enormous challenge England face against one of football’s elite goalscorers.

“They have one of the best strikers in the world and when he’s on the pitch, anything can happen.

“You can never be surprised if Erling scores two goals and they win a game. He’s done it how many times over the course of his career. He keeps doing it.”

Haaland has once again demonstrated why he is regarded as one of the world’s deadliest finishers, punishing defenders with his movement, strength and clinical finishing throughout the tournament.

However, Rogers believes Norway’s collective quality is equally dangerous.

Rather than focusing exclusively on Haaland, Rogers believes England’s success will depend on disrupting Norway’s overall attacking structure.

When asked how England intend to stop the prolific striker, Rogers admitted there is no guaranteed formula.

“Has anyone ever stopped Erling Haaland? I’m not sure they have but we are going to have to try. I think he’s such an unbelievable player, the things he does, the numbers he puts up, you’re just in awe of how good he is and the level he’s at.

“He was quick to point out that Norway possess several players capable of creating problems.

“But also, it’s not just him. They’ve got other good players as well that we play against regularly in the Premier League that we need to be mindful of.

“They’re a really good team. I think that’s what their biggest super strength is, that as a team, as a unit, they’re so strong.”

England’s coaching staff are expected to place significant emphasis on limiting the service into Haaland rather than engaging him in isolated battles inside the penalty area.

Rogers can draw confidence from his recent experiences with Aston Villa, who have managed to frustrate Manchester City and Haaland in several meetings.

Alongside England teammate Ezri Konsa, Rogers featured in Villa victories where the Norwegian striker was kept off the scoresheet.

Still, the midfielder knows previous success guarantees nothing.

“We’ve done well in those games against City but every game is different and he can just turn it on with a click of his fingers.

“We’ve just got to be so focused, so aware of the runs he makes and where he is in the box. He can be so deadly.”

The England international praised Konsa’s defensive qualities but stressed that containing Haaland requires complete team discipline.

“I know we’ve done well against Villa and Ezri is a great defender to come up against him but it takes a whole team effort to stop someone like that, stop their supply line and we’ve got to look at what they do as team, how they create chances and try and nullify him as best as possible.

“It is going to be difficult because not many people can.”

England head into Saturday’s clash full of confidence after surviving a dramatic Round of 16 battle against co-hosts Mexico, while Norway’s historic victory over Brazil has made them one of the tournament’s surprise packages.

With Haaland chasing more World Cup history and England dreaming of another step towards global glory, the battle between Europe’s rising powerhouse and one of football’s most feared strikers promises to be one of the defining contests of the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals.
