Tenerife forward De Miguel suffers cardiac arrest during Andorra match

Tenerife forward Jesus de Miguel has been rushed to hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest following a frightening on-field collision during his side’s LaLiga 2 encounter against Andorra on Monday.

The incident occurred in the closing stages of the match at Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López, where De Miguel was challenging for possession in midfield when he was struck in the chest by Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono.

The collision immediately raised alarm among players and officials, with medical personnel attending to the 30-year-old forward before he was taken to hospital for urgent treatment.

The match, which was level at 2-2, was suspended in the 108th minute as attention shifted from the contest to the condition of the injured player. Owono was shown a straight red card for the challenge that left De Miguel requiring medical attention.

Tenerife subsequently issued an update on the forward’s condition, confirming that he had been admitted to the intensive care unit at the Hospital Universitario de Nuestra Señora de Candelaria in Santa Cruz.

The club described his condition as serious but offered some reassurance, stating that De Miguel was “stable, despite the severity of his condition.”

The announcement brought a wave of support from across Spanish football, with several top-flight clubs and the Spanish Football Federation sending messages of encouragement and wishing the player a full recovery.

The RFEF also publicly expressed solidarity with the striker and his club, highlighting the concern felt across the football community following the incident.

“From the RFEF, we would like to extend all our encouragement, strength, and support to Jesús de Miguel, as well as to the entire CD Tenerife family,” the federation posted on social media.

The incident has once again drawn attention to the unpredictable dangers players can face during competitive matches, particularly in high-intensity challenges where injuries can occur in a split second.

De Miguel has built his professional career through several clubs in Spanish football. Since making his senior debut with Leganés B in 2015, the forward has represented eight other clubs before joining Tenerife last year.

His journey through the Spanish football system has seen him establish himself as an experienced player, making Monday’s incident particularly distressing for his teammates, club officials and supporters.

For now, football has taken a back seat as the focus remains firmly on De Miguel’s recovery. Messages of support continue to emerge, with the wider football community hoping the Tenerife forward can overcome the medical emergency and return to full health.
