Alexander Isak has admitted Liverpool have plenty to put right after their 3-2 Champions League defeat to Fenerbahce, insisting the Reds failed to meet the standards required despite taking the lead twice.
Liverpool’s perfect record in this season’s competition came to an end on Wednesday night after Vedat Muriqi struck an 79th-minute winner for the Turkish side, punishing the visitors for failing to protect their advantage.
The Reds had started brightly, with Trey Nyoni opening the scoring midway through the first half. However, their lead did not last long as Mason Greenwood’s deflected free-kick brought Fenerbahce level.
Isak then made an immediate impact after coming on in the second half, restoring Liverpool’s advantage and scoring his first Champions League goal for the club. But Archie Brown responded for the hosts before Muriqi delivered the decisive blow late in the contest.
Speaking to Liverpoolfc.com after the match, the Swedish striker made no attempt to hide his frustration, believing Liverpool had done enough to put themselves in a position to take something from the encounter.
“It’s never easy here but today I think we could and should get more out of the game. It’s a bit sloppy that we had the lead twice and for us to then lose the game is not good enough. Obviously we’re going to be disappointed from that.”
Isak also pointed to Liverpool’s inability to make the most of their goals as a major factor behind the defeat. With the atmosphere inside the stadium making the contest particularly demanding, he felt scoring should have helped the visitors take control and silence the home supporters.
“The atmosphere is really good and it’s tough, of course. So, the one thing you can do to keep them quiet is score goals. So, it’s a shame that we conceded quickly and we should capitalise on that. That’s where we were lacking today.”
Although his personal milestone offered a moment of satisfaction, the forward admitted the defeat took much of the shine off his first Champions League goal in Liverpool colours. He had hoped his strike would prove decisive, rather than become another moment in a losing performance.
“I was happy with it at the time. I was hoping that it was going to lead to more. I’m always happy to score goals but today we lost, so it takes a bit from it.”
The defeat also followed another recent setback, leaving Liverpool with back-to-back losses. However, Isak insisted the situation was far from beyond repair, pointing to the team’s position in the competition and the opportunity to respond in their next fixture.
“I think we’ve put ourselves in good positions, so that today if we lose this game it’s not a chaos situation. We just need to get back to winning ways, and if we win the next game we are back to a really good position.”
For Liverpool, the immediate priority is turning frustration into a response. Isak’s assessment was clear: taking the lead is not enough if the team cannot manage the crucial moments that follow. The Reds must rediscover their winning form quickly if they are to put the Fenerbahce disappointment behind them.
