Amorim hails Man United’s resilience after boxing day win over Newcastle

Manchester United recorded a hard-fought 1-0 win over Newcastle United on Boxing day in the English Premier League, much to the admiration of manager Ruben Amorim who praised his side’s fighting spirit in the win.

The Red Devils were without several first-team players for the clash, with captain Bruno Fernandes sidelined with an injury picked up in last weekend’s defeat to Aston Villa.

Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo and Noussair Mazraoui were also absent due to international commitments with Cameroon, Ivory Coast and Morocco respectively at the ongoing African Cup of Nations tournament.

However, the team dug deep and showed impressive team spirit as they claimed a much-needed win which sent them up to fifth on the standings.

“We had to suffer altogether in the stadium. It was really difficult for us. We had a good first half and then the second half we just defend and tried to do something with Cunha. We had our opportunities in transitions”, Amorim said after the match.

The Portuguese made a significant alteration to his tactical approach ahead of the clash, starting the game with a 4-4-2 setup, quite different from his preferred 3-4-2-1 style.

Newcastle struggled to contain the early threat posed by the Red Devils, who then took the lead through a stunning volley by Patrick Dorgu, who played in an unfamiliar right-wing position.

The team defended well and overcame a rampant second half attack from the Magpies to seal an important victory as they moved level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea.

“It was a good win, but I had so many games here when we played well and didn’t get the three points. Today it was the opposite.”

Manchester United will next be in action on Tuesday when they face winless Wolves, eyeing another victory in their final match of 2025.
