Arteta dismisses ‘bottlers’ tag amid Arsenal poor league form

Mikel Arteta has defended Arsenal’s recent performances, insisting that the team’s hopes of winning another Premier League title this season remain very much alive.

The Gunners have dropped points in their last two league matches, including a 2-2 draw at bottom-side Wolves in their last outing despite taking a two-goal lead in the tie.

Arteta’s side have finished third in three consecutive league seasons and their chances of winning a first league title since 2004 have now suffered a huge dent once again.

The gap between them and second-placed Manchester City remains just five points, although the Cityzens have a game in hand.

“That’s individual opinion, and you have to respect that. You lose two points against Wolves in the manner that the game played out, and you have to take it on the chin. That’s it. It’s part of our role”, Arteta said ahead of Sunday’s must-win clash against Tottenham.

“But it’s not part of my vocabulary and I don’t see it like this because I don’t think anybody wants to do that as an intention. I wouldn’t use that word.

When we haven’t been at our standards, I take full responsibility for that. I don’t think I have ever pointed at a single player or the team.”

Arsenal visit the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday in the second installment of the North London derby this season, hoping to win to keep their title chances alive.

The Gunners could lose momentum at the top if they fail to win at their city rivals, leaving much question about their mentality

“We have a very clear instruction, we have to live in the present, and the present is beautiful.

“We are exactly where we want to be in every competition. So, keeping calm, keeping my eyes open, my ears open, and understanding what the players need to give their best”, Arteta added.

Arsenal will face the out-of-form Tottenham Hotspur, who have a new manager in charge later tomorrow, seeking a massive win to boost their title chances.
