Real Madrid’s Arbeloa hits out at Mbappe over ‘fourth striker’ claim

Real Madrid head coach Alvaro Arbeloa has responded to Kylian Mbappe’s ‘fourth striker’ claims after their 2-0 win over Real Oviedo on Thursday.

Los Blancos returned to winning ways after last weekend’s defeat in the El Clasico, but the post-match interview was overshadowed by a clash of comments between Arbeloa and Mbappe.

The French superstar started the game on the bench, but was brought on in the second half and provided the assist for Jude Bellingham’s goal.

Speaking after the clash, Mbappe was disappointed on not starting and revealed he had been informed ahead of the match that he was fourth choice in attack behind Vinicius Junior, Gonzalo Garcia and Franco Mastantuono.

“I’m very well, 100%. I haven’t played because I’m the manager’s fourth-choice striker. I accept it and play the time they give me. I provided an assist for Jude, and you always have to be positive”, the former PSG forward said.

However, Arbeloa has hit back at the striker’s claims, revealing that he only made the decision due to fitness concerns, as Mbappe had missed last week’s El Clasico with injury.

“It never happened that I told Mbappé he’s our fourth striker. Maybe he misunderstood. I’ve never said it,” Arbeloa told the media.

“As long as I’m in this chair, I am the ONE who decides who plays and who doesn’t.

“I do not care what their names are. If they like it, fine, and if not, they can wait for the next one.”

Real Madrid are back in action this weekend when they face Sevilla, hoping for another win amid their off-field controversies.
