Inter Miami’s Messi sparks World Cup injury concern for Argentina

Lionel Messi has handed Argentina a major World Cup concern after appearing to suffer an injury issue during Inter Miami’s thrilling 6-4 victory on Monday night.

The 38-year-old captain was substituted in the 73rd minute after seemingly signalling discomfort before heading straight down the tunnel.

It marked the first time this season Messi failed to complete a full match after starting all 14 of Inter Miami’s league games.

Reports after the game suggested the Argentine superstar was feeling discomfort in his left leg, immediately raising fears just weeks before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Inter Miami manager Guillermo Hoyos admitted the club were still awaiting a full medical assessment but suggested fatigue may have contributed to the situation.

“I still haven’t received a report on that. I’ll wait for the medical update before speaking about any issues,” Hoyos declared.

Hoyos also explained why the decision was made to remove Messi during the closing stages of the game.

“Fatigue, he was tired, the pitch was heavy, and in case of doubt, one always tries to make sure he doesn’t take any risks.”

Argentina are expected to announce their final World Cup squad later this week, with Messi preparing for what could become his sixth appearance at football’s biggest tournament.

The defending world champions begin their campaign in 23 days against Algeria in Kansas City, and concerns over Messi’s condition will now dominate headlines across the football world.

While there is no official confirmation of a serious injury, any fitness issue involving the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner will immediately place Argentina on high alert ahead of the tournament.
