McTominay fancies Scotland’s chances at 2026 FIFA World Cup

Scott McTominay has revealed that Scotland are ready to overcome their disappointing run at the 2024 European Championship as they look ahead to an extended run at the upcoming World Cup.

Scotland will be participating in their first World Cup tournament since 1998 and will look to progress beyond the group stage of the tournament.

The Tartan Army have never progressed beyond the group stage, but McTominay believes this crop of players can rewrite history and qualify for the knockout rounds.

“It’s hugely important we approach it one game at a time and not look too far ahead”, McTominay said.

“For me, it’s those moments in football that you live for as a player.

“Just scoring a goal or being part of a World Cup campaign and, if you manage to help your country get there, these memories are some of the best moments of your life and you have to cherish them.

“You have to remember that that young boy watching would have snapped your hand off to even have the opportunity to do this”, the Napoli midfielder added.

McTominay will be one of the key players for Scotland when they head into the tournament next month in the United States, Mexico and Canada.

The former Manchester United midfielder has been in superb form since joining Napoli in 2024 and will hope to carry that momentum into the tournament for his country.

“The pinnacle of football is playing at a World Cup and the Champions League”, McTominay revealed.

“That’s where every young boy dreams of playing football and that’s where I want to play football.

“For me, it is about not getting too carried away and doing all the things that allowed you to compete at this level, which is relentless work in the gym and training to the best of your abilities in every training session”, he concluded.

Scotland have been placed in group C and will begin their campaign against Haiti on June 14, before games against Morocco and Brazil on the 19th and 24th respectively.
