Cape Verde shock Uruguay in World Cup classic thriller

Cape Verde’s remarkable FIFA World Cup adventure reached another unforgettable chapter as the African debutants held two-time champions Uruguay to a thrilling 2-2 draw in Miami.

In a match filled with attacking courage, dramatic twists and defensive chaos, Cape Verde once again proved they belong on football’s biggest stage after pushing Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay to the limit in a classic Group H encounter.

The island nation started the match with the same fearless mentality that has defined their tournament campaign.

They refused to sit back against one of world football’s historic powers and were rewarded with a stunning opening goal.

Kevin Pina produced a moment of brilliance, curling a long-range free-kick through a hesitant Uruguay wall to send Cape Verde supporters into celebration.

The strike captured the confidence and belief that has carried the team through their historic World Cup journey.

Uruguay responded quickly and showed why they remain one of the competition’s most experienced teams.

Maxi Araujo became the difference-maker, scoring his second goal of the tournament before turning provider moments later.

Araujo’s creativity helped set up Agustin Canobbio, whose finish completed a rapid turnaround just before half-time and appeared to put Uruguay in control. But Cape Verde refused to surrender.

The African side continued to attack with belief and were rewarded after a costly defensive mistake from Uruguay.

Mathias Olivera’s poor pass across the back line created confusion, forcing goalkeeper Fernando Muslera to rush from his position.

Substitute Helio Varela reacted brilliantly, lifting the ball over Muslera before calmly finishing into an empty net to restore parity.

Uruguay pushed for a winner in the closing stages, and Araujo thought he had completed the comeback with a close-range finish.

However, the goal was ruled out after an offside decision against the forward.

Cape Verde then produced heroic defensive moments to protect their point, with Steven Moreira making two crucial blocks to deny Brian Rodriguez and Rodrigo Bentancur from dangerous positions.

The final minutes delivered even more drama. Laros Duarte had a huge opportunity to win the game for Cape Verde but fired directly at the goalkeeper, while Varela was denied a second goal by a superb last-ditch challenge from Bentancur.

The draw keeps Cape Verde’s knockout-stage dream alive. They head into their final group match against Saudi Arabia knowing a positive result could send them into the Round of 32.

For Uruguay, qualification is now more complicated. Bielsa’s side may need a result against Spain in their final fixture to keep their World Cup hopes alive.

Cape Verde came to the tournament as underdogs. They are leaving a mark as one of its biggest stories.
