Xabi Alonso has put Joao Pedro in elite company after comparing the Chelsea striker to former Real Madrid great Karim Benzema.
The Brazilian has wasted little time making his mark under Alonso, with his electric start to the 2026/27 Premier League campaign earning him the Player of the Month award for August.
Joao Pedro scored and assisted in Chelsea’s victories over Fulham and Brighton and Hove Albion, helping the Blues make a perfect start to the new league season.
And while Alonso has only worked with the forward for a matter of months, the Chelsea boss already sees something special in his No.9.
The manager has been impressed not only by Joao Pedro’s ability in front of goal, but also by his personality, maturity and desire to keep improving.
‘He’s been top, not just football-wise but personality-wise, his maturity,’ said Alonso. ‘He has a very strong goal this year: to have a great season, to score many goals, to be a [Player of the Month] nominee not just this month, but for more months.
‘I’m really not surprised, but am really happy with the kind of player that we have with Joao.’
Those words underline the expectations building around the 24-year-old.
Alonso has already placed Joao Pedro alongside the Premier League’s biggest attacking stars when discussing his potential. Yet his most striking comparison comes from the Spaniard’s own experience at Real Madrid.
Benzema was renowned for being far more than a conventional goalscorer. He could link play, drift into wide areas, contribute outside the penalty box and still deliver when the biggest chances arrived.
Alonso sees many of those qualities in Joao Pedro.
‘As a profile of striker, he seems to be able to do everything,’ said Alonso. ‘He reminds me of (Karim) Benzema because he’s good in the box, he’s good out of the box, he’s good coming to the left side, good with the head. He’s very complete. He’s intelligent.
‘So yes, he’s still young, and he still has things to develop, but he has many absolutely outstanding qualities.’
That comparison will inevitably raise expectations around Stamford Bridge, but Alonso appears convinced that Joao Pedro has the tools to handle them.
His early numbers have certainly provided plenty of encouragement. The Brazilian has quickly become one of the focal points of Chelsea’s attack, combining goals, assists and intelligent movement to give Alonso’s side greater flexibility in the final third.
The manager’s system also allows his forwards to interchange positions, making Joao Pedro’s ability to operate both inside and outside the penalty area particularly valuable.
For Chelsea, the hope is that this is only the beginning.
