David Moyes believes Jarrad Branthwaite has done enough to put himself firmly in the England conversation.
The Everton defender continued his impressive start to the new season with another assured performance in Saturday’s 0-0 draw against Tottenham, strengthening the case for a return to the international fold.
Branthwaite endured a frustrating 2025-26 campaign because of injuries, limiting his opportunities to establish any real rhythm. However, the left-footed centre-back has looked increasingly comfortable in recent weeks and is beginning to show the form that made him one of Everton’s most highly rated defenders.
With England boss Thomas Tuchel preparing to name his squad for the upcoming Nations League fixtures on Friday, Moyes believes Branthwaite could be in contention.
“I think England have got some brilliant centre halves,” Moyes said.
“You’re talking about (Marc) Guehi, (Levi) Colwill and (Ezri) Konsa, you can name a few that are really good, but Jarrad is a really good player.
“I think he has far more to come. I think he is still finding his way after his injury and it would be great if he gets called up.
“I want my players to get called up for their country because that means that they are doing well, the team is doing well and Jimmy Garner at the end of last year got called up with a chance of going to the World Cup.
“I hope they do and one or two others are playing well. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall has had a really good start to the season as well.”
Moyes’ backing comes at an important stage in Branthwaite’s development. The defender is not simply benefiting from his reputation; his recent performances suggest he is steadily returning to his best after an injury-disrupted campaign.
His composure against Tottenham was another positive sign. Everton managed to leave North London with a clean sheet, with Branthwaite playing his part in a disciplined defensive display.
The England centre-back competition remains fierce, with Tuchel having several established options available. Guehi, Colwill and Konsa are among the defenders competing for places, meaning Branthwaite would have to force his way into a crowded picture.
Still, Moyes sees plenty of room for further improvement from the Everton defender.
That could make an England call-up a significant next step rather than the final destination for Branthwaite. If he can maintain his fitness and continue producing consistent performances, his international prospects are likely to become increasingly difficult to ignore.
Moyes also highlighted Everton’s other players making an impression, including Jimmy Garner and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.
For Branthwaite, however, the immediate target is clear: keep performing at this level and give Tuchel a decision to make.
With the England squad announcement approaching, Everton’s defensive standout may now be closer than ever to another opportunity on the international stage.
