Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah was in superb form as Liverpool clinched a record-equaling 20th English League title with a 5-1 demolition of Tottenham Hotspur.
Tale of the game
The Reds came into the game needing a point to equal Manchester United’s haul of 20 English League titles, after second-placed Arsenal had dropped points against Crystal Palace on Wednesday.
The Anfield crowd were silenced minutes into the game as Dominic Solanke opened the scoring with a header before the floodgates opened for the hosts.
Luis Diaz scored from a Dominic Szoboszlai pullback, given after a VAR review, before a screamer from Alexis MacAllister and a third from Cody Gakpo set the Reds on the road to victory.
Player of the season frontrunner, Mohamed Salah joined the party with Liverpool’s fourth and his 28th league goal of the season, before Spurs defender Destiny Udogie turned into his own net as the Reds secured the title in front of their home fans.
Arne Slot’s impact
Slot joined the Reds as Jurgen Klopp successor last summer and has made an immediate impact at the club, joining an elite league of managers to have won the league in their first season in England, alongside Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti, Manuel Pellegrini and Antonio Conte.
The 46-year old also became the first Dutchman to win the English Premier League, equaling his predecessor’s league title-haul while also ending Pep Guardiola’s four-year dominance in the league.
Liverpool were on the front foot for a majority of the season with only two losses in 34 matches, as Slot’s tactical tweaks were evident in transforming the team.
The Reds currently have 82 points and have the opportunity to hit the 90-point mark with four game’s remaining.
Mohamed Salah’s outstanding season
Egyptian maestro Mohamed Salah scored Liverpool’s fourth against Tottenham on Sunday to make it 28 league goals for the season alongside 18 assists in what has been one of the greatest-ever individual season in an English league.
The 32-year old was subject of a transfer speculation for majority of the season but penned a two-year extension two weeks ago that will keep him at the club until 2027.
Salah also surpassed Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero as the Premier League’s top-scoring foreign player with his 185th in the thrashing of Spurs, since joining eight years ago from AS Roma.
The former Chelsea winger also moved to fifth on the Premier League all-time goalscoring chart behind Alan Shearer(260), Harry Kane(213), Wayne Rooney(208) and Andy Cole(187), while he is also two goal contributions from becoming the outright leader for most goal contributions in a Premier League season.
