Bruno Guimaraes berates Newcastle’s display after derby defeat to Sunderland

Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes did not hold back after Newcastle United’s derby defeat to Sunderland, branding the performance unacceptable following a narrow loss decided by a single goal.

The Magpies were beaten 1-0 at the Stadium of Light, with Nick Woltemade’s second-half own goal settling the first Premier League Tyne–Wear derby since March 2016.

Newcastle arrived on Wearside in strong form, having taken 10 points from their previous four league games and with the chance to move above their local rivals.

Instead, they delivered a flat display, managing just two shots on target and failing to impose themselves in a game that stretched their winless league run against Sunderland to 10 matches.

Guimaraes was furious at full-time, questioning his side’s mentality and effort in a fixture he felt demanded far more.

“I’m very angry, I’m so embarrassed and I’m so frustrated,” the Brazilian told Sky Sports. “There was no crossing, no passing and no shooting. No nothing. It was a mess, in my opinion.

“We know we have a better team than them (Sunderland) but we didn’t play like the better team. It was a mess. The consistency isn’t there, the mentality isn’t there. We didn’t compete. The fans expect & deserve better.

“We accepted the way they play with the long balls. You need to compete in a derby and we didn’t. We only have one way we can go from here…and that’s winning in a few days.”

The result leaves Newcastle in the bottom-half of the Premier League table with 22 points from 16 games. Meanwhile, Sunderland continue their strong start to the season, occupying seventh position with 26 points from 16 games.
