Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has praised Max Dowman after the teenager’s stunning breakthrough moment for the Gunners, admitting the goal left him with “goosebumps” while also urging caution over rising expectations.
Dowman made headlines in the Premier League after producing a dazzling solo effort in Arsenal’s 2–0 victory against Everton.
The 16-year-old weaved past two defenders before confidently finishing past Jordan Pickford, sealing his place in history as the youngest goalscorer in the competition.
As the Emirates faithful celebrated, the moment quickly gained wider attention, with Henry reflecting on the significance of the youngster’s achievement during his appearance on Monday Night Football.
“I had goosebumps, I’ll be honest with you,” Henry said.
“I don’t often get goosebumps watching a game, but I had goosebumps because I remember my first goal, my first moment.
“Even if you are not an Arsenal fan, at the particular moment I think everyone could relate and was happy for him and put the Arsenal thing on the side. I had goosebumps to be honest.”
Drawing from his own experience and recalling past prodigies, Henry compared the excitement around Dowman to that of Wayne Rooney during his early rise, while stressing the importance of careful development.
“I was there when Rooney did it and if someone told me he was going to have the career that he had I would have said maybe.
“But what you need to do is make sure that you can protect him along the way.
“We have a special talent here, not just for Arsenal but for English football. Let’s not get over-excited with that.”
While clearly delighted to see such a talent emerge at his former club, the France international legend was quick to highlight the dangers of placing too much pressure on a young player still at the beginning of his journey.
“Am I happy that he is at Arsenal? Hell yeah, I am happy that he is at Arsenal.
“But we also need to protect him and not go too far, too early with what he can achieve.”
As the North London outfit continue their campaign, Dowman’s record-breaking goal has injected fresh excitement into the squad.
However, as Henry rightly pointed out, managing expectations will be key to ensuring the young star’s long-term success both at the club and beyond.
