Manchester United CEO Omar Berrada confirms desire to keep Fernandes

Manchester United chief Omar Berrada has expressed the club’s desire to keep captain Bruno Fernandes beyond his current contract.

Fernandes joined Manchester United from Sporting CP in 2020 and his current contract is set to expire at the end of the 2026-27 season.

The Portuguese midfielder was heavily linked with a move away from Old Trafford last summer, and exit speculations have resurfaced heading into another summer.

However, Berrarda, who joined the club in 2023 after INEOS took over football operations at the club has revealed that a possible contract extension is the next priority.

“I think in Bruno, we have a fantastic captain. Absolutely fantastic,” Berrada said.

“We’d like him to stay. Of course we do. He’s had a great season on the pitch and more importantly, I think he’s shown everybody that he is a great leader.

“People don’t see what he does outside the pitch and he deserves a lot of credit.”

The Manchester United CEO also backed Michael Carrick to achieve success at the club, after his recent appointment on a permanent deal.

Carrick took over on an interim basis earlier in the year and guided the club to an impressive third-placed finish, earning him the job on a permanent basis.

“I think he’s earned the right to continue leading the team over the next two years or more”, Berrarda added.

“I would describe him as somebody who is very calm but also very driven and I’m sure he’ll do everything he can, he and his staff, to make sure that we have a successful team this season, next season and the year after.

“And I think when we look at the squad and what we’re trying to do over the next two years, he does bring the right attributes, the right ingredients, character, understanding of the club to help us navigate through the next steps of our journey”, he concluded.

Manchester United are expected to be very active in the summer transfer window, as they seek to reinforce the squad to challenge for trophies next season.
