Lukaku’s agent sends strong message to Napoli ahead of 2026-27 season

Romelu Lukaku’s agent Federico Pastorello has warned Napoli that the Belgian striker will not accept a backup role at the club during the 2026-27 season.

Lukaku joined the former Serie A champions in 2024 but endured an injury disrupted time last season, limiting him to just 64 minutes of action across all competitions for the Italian club.

His future had come under intense scrutiny ahead of the summer transfer window, leading to questions over whether he would remain at the club next season.

However, Pastorello has now revealed that Lukaku will not take up a reserve role at the club and will only stay if he is assured of a more regular playing role.

“Obviously not. He’s an extraordinary player, and he’s proved it. He’s one of the most prolific strikers in the world. It’s hard for us to accept a situation like that”, Lukaku’s agent revealed.

“Obviously there might be an initial pecking order, but ultimately it’s what happens on the pitch that decides.

“Behind Manna’s comments, there could also be financial considerations, given that there are two top-class strikers.

“Lucca will be coming back as well,” Pastorello added.

Lukaku and Napoli were involved in a row earlier in the year and it is unclear if he would be handed an extension with his contract set to expire next summer.

“That creates a bit of a stalemate. Right now, the transfer market is completely at a standstill, and the market for strikers hasn’t really started yet. That will have a domino effect”, he continued.

“Even proposing a contract extension comes with additional costs. It’s not just about the wages. Romelu has earned this level of contract because of everything he’s accomplished throughout his career.

“Perhaps the time hasn’t come yet to spread his salary over a longer period. Last season wasn’t entirely his fault. If he had been allowed to stay and train where he wanted, he might have returned sooner and played a leading role at the World Cup, which, in the end, he did anyway. Romelu isn’t the kind of person who stays where he’s not wanted. A club strategy can be perfectly legitimate”, Pastorello concluded.

Napoli continue their preseason action with a clash against Carrarese on Sunday, with Lukaku expected to join up with the rest of the squad in the coming days.
