Manchester United appoint Michael Carrick as interim manager

Manchester United have announced that former midfielder Michael Carrick will join the club as head coach until the end of the season.

The Red Devils had been without a coach since Ruben Amorim was dismissed earlier in the year after only 14 months in charge of the club.

The former Middlesbrough manager beat Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to the job and takes over from Darren Fletcher, who had been in charge of the Red Devils’ last two matches.

Carrick will be helped by former England assistant coach Steve Holland, as well as Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans and Travis Binnion

“Having the responsibility to lead Manchester United is an honor. I know what it takes to succeed here; my focus is now on helping the players to reach the standards that we expect at this incredible club, which we know that this group is more than capable of producing”, Carrick said on his return to Man United.

“I have worked with a number of the players already and have obviously continued to watch the team closely in recent years, I have total belief in their talents, dedication and ability to be successful here,” Carrick added.

“There is still a lot to fight for this season, we are ready to pull everyone together and give the fans the performances that their loyal support deserves.”

It marks his second spell in charge of the club, having previously stayed at the dugout for three games in 2021, following the dismissal of Solskjaer.

Carrick will resume training at the club’s first-team training ground in Carrington on Wednesday, in preparation for the Manchester derby this weekend.

“Michael is an excellent coach and knows exactly what it takes to win at Manchester United,” Wilcox said.

“He is ready to lead our talented and determined group of players for the remainder of the season as we continue to build the club towards regular and sustained success.”

Carrick’s first game in charge on his return to Manchester United is a difficult test against city rivals Manchester City, before facing league leaders Arsenal a week later.
