Frank rules out plans to strip Romero as Tottenham captain

Thomas Frank has revealed that Cristian Romero will remain Tottenham Hotspur’s captain despite recent controversies surrounding the defender.

The Argentine defender was sent off in the first half of the clash against Manchester United at Old Trafford, a game which his side went on to lose 2-0.

The 27-year-old had also criticized the club’s hierarchy earlier this week, following their quiet transfer business over the transfer window despite their injury crisis.

It was not his first time of lashing out at the owners this season, as he also made controversial statements on his social media after a 3-2 defeat to Bournemouth in January.

Speaking after the match, Frank who has come under pressure for Spurs’ poor league performances, threw his support behind Romero as captain.

“No. Also, he is sorry for the incident. He apologised to his teammates in the dressing room. He is one of the most important players”, Frank said.

The Argentine defender was sent off for a poor challenge on Casemiro in the first half of the clash, marking his second sending off of the season.

He could miss up to four matches, beginning with Tuesday’s clash against Newcastle United.

Bryan Mbeumo opened the scoring for Manchester United in the first half after a brilliant corner routine.

Captain Bruno Fernandes doubled the lead in the second half with a brilliant finish as Spurs struggled to create any threat in the encounter.

“Cristian first and foremost, there is no intention to do the follow through and get a red,” Frank added.

“He clearly goes for the ball. Unfortunately, the way the rules are, it becomes a red.”

Tottenham remain in 14th place on the standings after their 10th league defeat of the season, while Manchester United consolidated their position in fourth with their fourth consecutive league win.
