Eddie Howe admits confidence dip at Newcastle United

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has openly addressed his side’s recent struggles, pointing to a noticeable drop in confidence as a key factor behind their dip in form.

Following a frustrating outing against Bournemouth, Howe acknowledged that momentum has stalled, with performances falling below the standard expected from his squad.

As results have slipped, the ripple effect has clearly impacted individual displays on the pitch.

“We’ve lost a little bit of confidence. I think that was clear against Bournemouth on Saturday,” said Howe.

“With the recent results we’ve had and just the way things have fallen against us, players aren’t playing to their maximum level. You can see that.”

Despite possessing a talented group, Howe admitted that several players are currently underperforming, stressing how damaging a lack of confidence can be in elite football.

“We’ve got some very, very good players in the squad that are underperforming and you can’t put a figure on how confidence can damage the individuals.”

In response, the focus this week has shifted toward rebuilding belief and sharpening both individual and team performances.

Howe emphasized his role in guiding the squad back to their best levels.

“My job this week has been to support the players, to help the players, hopefully deliver some good work for them, then try and help them figure out how we can get back – individaually and collectively – to our best levels.”

Looking ahead, the Newcastle boss made it clear that results remain the ultimate measure, with on-field performances needing immediate improvement.

“Everything falls back to the results and what we deliver on the pitch.”

Even as external matters continue in the background, Howe remains confident in the club’s long-term direction, while urging his players to rediscover the consistency that defined previous campaigns.

“The club will move forward; I’ve said that time and time again. The off-the-pitch stuff will take care of itself, but on the pitch, we have to be trying to continue the good momentum we’ve had over previous seasons.”

As the season enters a crucial phase, Howe sees the current dip not as a setback, but as a test of resilience for his squad.

“We’ve faltered a little bit of late, but that’s the challenge.”
