Newcastle’s Woltemade defends Wirtz as Liverpool new boy faces scrutiny

Nick Woltemade has thrown his support behind compatriot Florian Wirtz, insisting the Liverpool playmaker is “doing very well” despite outside criticism.

Wirtz arrived at Anfield last summer in a blockbuster £116.5m move from Bayer Leverkusen. Yet he is still searching for his first goal in Liverpool colours, a stat that has drawn attention for all the wrong reasons.

Woltemade knows the feeling. He also swapped the Bundesliga for the Premier League when he joined Newcastle last summer. And he believes Wirtz is being unfairly judged.

“For every player, adjusting isn’t easy. But he’s doing very well,” Woltemade told RTL/n-tv/sport.de.

“On paper, you might not see the goals, but if you compare my games with his, he’s much more involved in play.

“I’ve probably been in the right spot three or four times, received the ball and scored – but he’s very active in the game, gets lots of touches and makes good plays.”

The Reds’ fans continue to wait for the German’s first big moment. But in the eyes of his teammates, the impact is already there, even if the stats don’t tell the full story.
