Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany is making progress after being hospitalised last week, with assistant coach Aaron Danks offering a positive update on the Belgian’s recovery.
Kompany collapsed at Bayern’s training ground on Friday and was subsequently unable to lead the team for Sunday’s 3-1 Bundesliga victory away at Freiburg. His absence has left the German champions waiting for further clarity on when their manager can resume his duties.
Danks, however, has revealed that Kompany remains in good spirits and appears to be improving, although there is still no definitive medical prognosis regarding his return.
Speaking at a news conference ahead of Bayern’s German Cup clash with Magdeburg on Wednesday, the assistant coach confirmed that he had visited Kompany and was encouraged by his condition.
“I popped in to see Vincent briefly yesterday,” he said. “He’s in good spirits. It looks as though things are improving day by day. There’s no definitive prognosis.
“He’s very calm and is being given plenty of time to recover. We had some good chats, but they had nothing to do with football or tactics. He asked how we were getting on.”
The update offers some reassurance for Bayern supporters, but it does not provide a timeline for Kompany’s return to the dugout. The club’s priority remains allowing the 40-year-old coach sufficient time to recover without rushing him back into work.
Bayern sporting director Max Eberl had previously indicated that the Belgian’s absence could extend beyond a few days. Speaking on Friday, Eberl said it would be “weeks, not days” before Kompany was ready to return.
That assessment suggests Bayern may need to continue without their head coach for a period, although Danks’ latest comments indicate that his condition is moving in the right direction.
Kompany’s absence comes during a demanding period for the German giants, who are preparing for another cup assignment against Magdeburg. Danks and the rest of the coaching staff will be responsible for maintaining the team’s focus while their manager concentrates on his recovery.
The assistant coach also revealed that his conversation with Kompany was deliberately kept away from football matters. Rather than discussing tactics or the upcoming fixture, the pair spoke about how the staff were managing in his absence.
For now, Bayern have received an encouraging update, but uncertainty remains over when Kompany will return. With no definitive prognosis available, the club must wait for further developments before making any firm plans for his comeback.
